This is a memory of the Nuestro Huerto project. You can see stage by stage how it was built by reading and viewing the photos on this blog, or by watching this video made by Carlos Domínguez. I add a small text below this video telling how this project came out and thanking everyone involved.
Esta es una memoria del proyecto Nuestro Huerto. Podrás ver etapa por etapa como fué que se construyó leyendo y viendo las fotos de este blog, o mirando este video realizado por Carlos Domínguez. Agrego un pequeño texto abajo de este video contando cómo fue que surgió este proyecto y agradeciendo a todos los involucrados.
After living in Nuevo León Mexico during the most acute period of drug violence in the state, I began to ask myself many questions about our social way of relating. What most questioned me was how had it been possible to have "hanged" on pedestrian bridges? I began to imagine that if we occupied the "abandoned" spaces it would be more complicated for them to take them for those actions. I began dreaming about planting community gardens on the pedestrian bridges cared by the neighbors so in this way, having a careful and guarded space, it would be more difficult for this type of acts to take place. With community gardens, it would be possible to achieve food autonomy and perhaps productive projects that could represent an economic benefit for those who work in them, instead of participating in the organized crime. With that idea in mind, Life took me to Mexico City and I found out about the "Domiciolio Conocido" contest; which sought to rebuild the social fabric through an artistic proposal. Even do this task is much more complex than could be accomplished in a month (as the contest suggested), I decided to apply by exploring working with the land, therapeutic plants, and community in an urban context. To carry out the action, I chose to intervene the Footprint of the Nuevo León Building, since it was very significant to me that there was an abandoned space with that name, after the fall of the building in 1985. When I did my first scouting I realized that a few blocks away there was also another footprint it was of the Oaxaca building and it was already an edible garden, when before it had been a garbage dump. This finding was very symbolic since at the age of 17 I lived in Oaxaca and received my second most important memory mark. In this way I knew that the community artistic proposal that I was putting forward would have a very significant impact on my psychic world. I planned to make a union through the plants that we would install in the Footprint of the Nuevo León Building, up to the Footprint of the Oaxaca Building. In this way the neighbors could feel visually invited to collaborate with the existing garden. Poetically it would be the union of the south and the north, a memorial of the people who transcended after the earthquake, a way to beautify the landscape, a living excuse to gather the neighbors and take care of the vegetation, a way to honor my history and the geographic states where I received the hardest emotional blows.

The intervention lasted four months and consisted of six stages: 1 planning, 2 dissemination, 3 insertion, 4 installation, 5 monitoring and evaluation, 6 symbolic closure. It was hard work that paid off. The ties of some neighbors were strengthened and a close collaboration with the Orchard in charge of the Cultiva Ciudad Association was achieved.

Since this intervention I witness the power, beauty and goodness of working with nature, deciding to deepen its essence and create with it.
Tras vivir en Nuevo León México en el periodo de narcoviolencia más agudo del estado, comencé a preguntarme muchas cosas respecto a nuestra forma social de relacionarnos. Lo que más me cuestionaba era ¿cómo había sido posible llegar a tener "colgados" en los puentes peatonales? Empecé a imaginar que si ocupábamos los espacios "abandonados" sería más complicado que los tomaran para esas acciones. Soñaba con sembrar huertos comunitarios en los puentes peatonales cuidados por l@ vecin@s y de esa manera al tener un espacio cuidado y vigilado, sería más difícil que este tipo de actos tuvieran lugar. Con los huertos comunitarios, sería posible comenzar a lograr una autonomía alimentaria y quizás proyectos productivos que podrían representar un beneficio económico para quienes los trabajaran, en vez de participar del crimen organizado. Con esa idea en mente, la Vida me llevó a la Ciudad de México y me enteré de la convocatoria Domicilio Conocido; la cual buscaba reconstruir el tejido social por medio de una propuesta artística. Si bien esta tarea es mucho más compleja de lo que se pudiera lograr en un mes (como lo planteaba el concurso), decidí aplicar explorando el trabajo con la tierra, las plantas terapéuticas y la comunidad en un contexto urbano. Para realizar la acción elegí intervenir la Huella del Edificio de Nuevo León, ya que me resultaba muy significativo que existiera un espacio abandonado con ese nombre, tras la caída del edificio en 1985. Al realizar mi primer scouting me di cuenta que a unas cuadras se encontraba también la Huella del edificio Oaxaca y ya era un huerto comestible, cuando antes había sido un basurero. Este hallazgo fue muy simbólico ya que a los 17 años viví en Oaxaca y recibí mi segunda huella mnémica más importante. De esta manera supe que la propuesta artística comunitaria que estaba planteando tendría una repercusión muy significativa en mi mundo psíquico.
Proyecté hacer una unión a través de las plantas que instalaríamos en la Huella del Edificio de Nuevo León, hasta la Huella del Edificio Oaxaca.  De esta manera los vecinos podrían sentirse invitados visualmente a colaborar con el huerto ya existente. Poéticamente sería la unión del sur y el norte, un memorial de las personas que trascendieron tras el terremoto, una forma de embellecer el paisaje, una excusa viva para reunir a los vecinos y cuidar de la vegetación, una forma de honrrar  mi historia y los estados geográficos en donde recibí los golpes anímicos más duros.

La intervención duró cuatro meses y constó de seis etapas: 1 planeación, 2 difusión, 3 inserción, 4 instalación, 5 acompañamiento y evaluación, 6 cierre simbólico. Fue un trabajo arduo que valió la pena. Se logró el fortalecimiento de lazos de algunos vecinos y una colaboración estrecha con el Huerto a cargo de la Asociación Cultiva Ciudad.

A partir de esta intervención puede atestiguar el poder, belleza y bondad de trabajar con la naturaleza, decidiendo profundizar en su esencia y crear con ella.

As agreed, we carried out the symbolic closure at the Nuevo León Building Footprint (where the intervention is). ​It was attended by representatives of the UVA, Cultiva Ciudad, Department of Ecology of the Cuauhtemoc Delegation, Santa María Nonoalco Tlatelolco Territorial, Sheratan Female Troop of the Scout Group 48 “Atlacuihuayan” and the Guardianes de Tlatelolco neighborhood team.
​We gave a few words, we read the letter from Guardians of Tlatelolco where their co-authorship was recognized and to each of its members, we distributed diplomas of gratitude and participation (also to the small stores that use water for irrigation).
​Finishing up, we went to Cultiva Ciudad for the corn ceremony and sowing together.
Como acordamos, realizamos el cierre simbólico en la Huella del Edificio de Nuevo León (donde está la intervención). Asistieron representantes de la UVA, Cultiva Ciudad, Departamento de Ecología de la Delegación Cuauhtemoc, Territorial Santa María Nonoalco Tlatelolco, Tropa Femenina Sheratan del Grupo Scout 48 “Atlacuihuayan” y el equipo de vecin@s Guardianes de Tlatelolco.
Dimos unas palabras, leimos la carta de Guardianes de Tlatelolco en donde se reconocía su co-autoría y a cada uno de sus miembros, repartimos diplomas de agradecimiento y participación (también a las tienditas avastesedoras de agua para el riego)
Terminando fuimos a Cultiva Ciudad a la ceremonia del maíz y a sembrar juntos.

We meet at Mireya's house to evaluate our work and to dream up the next steps to take. We thought that in general the installation had been positive to be able to articulate the UVA, the Delgacional Ecological Directorate, Cultiva Ciudad AC, the Territorial in Santa María Tlatelolco, the neighbors, by creating networks with the newspaper Vivir en Tlatelolco, members of the Sheratan Women's Troop of the Scout Group 48 "Atlacuihuayan" and Mauricio Badillo (master of urban gardens at the UVA). This confluence and coexistence was achieved in just 5 months. There was a response that exceeded expectations. At the time of installation, perhaps it would have been better if we had more resources to install the posters and if we had carried out tests before placing the planters, since we did not know that we had to moisten the bricks before putting cement on them. It was agreed that the neighbors themselves would restore it if necessary.

​The neighbors also agreed on the objectives and upcoming activities of the Guardianes de Tlatelolco group (a name that the neighbors involved in the installation decided to use). The plant irrigation roll was confirmed, a forthcoming reforestation and it was decided to take care and improvement of the ecology and culture in Tlatelolco as an objective.

The neighbors decided that it would be good to have a symbolic closure where all the instances involved would be invited and at the same time the neighborhood co-authorship would be recognized and that the care of the installation would be at their own expense.
This act would also serve to publicize the neighborhood group Guardianes de Tlatelolco, thinking that in the future, having prior recognition would make it easier to manage future projects.

Nos reunimos en casa de Mireya para evaluar nuestro trabajo y para soñar los siguientes pasos a tomar.
Pensamos que en general la instalación había resultado positiva al poder articular a la UVA, a la Dirección Ecológica Delgacional, a Cultiva Ciudad A.C., a la Territorial en Santa María Tlatelolco, a l@s vecin@s, al crear redes con el periódico Vivir en Tlatelolco, integrantes de laTropa Femenina Sheratan del Grupo Scout 48 “Atlacuihuayan” y Mauricio Badillo (maestro de huertos urbanos en la UVA).
Se logró esta confluencia y convivencia en tan solo 5 meses. Hubo una respuesta que sobrepasó expectativas.
Ya a la hora de la instalación, quizás hubiese sido mejor si contáramos con más recursos para instalar los carteles y si hubiéramos realizado pruebas antes de colocar los maceteros pues no sabíamos que teníamos que humedecer los ladrillos antes de ponerles cemento. Se acordó que entre los mismos vecinos lo restaurarían en caso de que hiciera falta.

También las vecinas se pusieron de acuerdo sobre los objetivos y próximas actividades del grupo Guardianes de Tlatelolco (nombre que decidieron emplear los vecin@s involucrad@s en la instalación). 
Se confirmó el roll de riego de plantas, una próxima reforestación y se decidió tomar como objetivo el cuidado y mejoramiento de la ecología y cultura en Tlatelolco.

L@s vecinas decidieron que sería bueno contar con un cierre simbólico en donde se invitara a todas las instacias involucradas y a la vez se roconocierá la co-autoría vecinal y que el cuidado de la instalación correría por su cuenta.
Este acta también serviría para dar a conocer públicamente al grupo vecinal Guardianes de Tlatelolco, pensando que en el futuro al contar con un reconocimiento previo sería más fácil la gestión de futuros proyectos.

After much waiting, we were able to install the medicinal plants. The vegetable palette was decided by the neighbors (passion fruit, monks cress and jasmine) as well as the aesthetics and information of the signs that were placed. We developed a plan and strategy for the care and irrigation of the plants and the neighbors decided to name the installation as: "El pasaje de las Flores". They also named themselves as: Guardians of Tlatelolco. They agreed to take care of the installation and continue meeting to make other environmental and cultural improvements in the neighborhood.
Después de mucha espera, pudimos instalar las enredaderas medicinales. La paleta vegetal la decidieron los vecinos (maracuyá, mastuerzo y jazmín) así como la estética e información de los letreros que se colocaron. Elaboramos un plan y estrategia de cuidado y riego de las plantas y los vecinos decidieron nombrar la instalación como: El pasaje de las Flores. También se nombraron a ellos mismos como: Guardianes de Tlatelolco. Acordaron cuidar la instalación y continuar reuniéndose para hacer otras mejoras medioambientales y culturales en el barrio.

The insertion was achieved through the projection of short films, workshops and neighborhood talks. Which sought to motivate the neighbors to actively participate in the project and be the ones to install the vertical vine of edible flowers and fruits. To achieve this, an alliance was created with the A.C. Cultiva Ciudad to train neighbors in planting and composting techniques as well as to weave links between neighbors and the garden (located about 4 blocks from the future facility (exactly on the Footprint of the Oaxaca Building)
La inserción la logré mediante la proyección de cortometrajes, talleres y pláticas vecinales. Los cuales buscaban motivar a los vecinos para que participaran activamente en el proyecto y fueran quienes instalaran la enredadera vertical de flores y frutos comestibles. Para lograr esto, se creó un alianza con la A.C. Cultiva Ciudad para que capacitara a los vecinos en técnicas de siembra y composteo así como para tejer vínculos entre los vecinos y el huerto (ubicado a unas 4 cuadras de la futura instalación (exactamente en la Huella del Edificio Oaxaca)
As the activities went on, an increasingly solid neighborhood group was created. Even the neighbors themselves began to propose and facilitate Saturday activities =)
Conforme fueron pasando las actividades, se fué creando un grupo vecinal cada vez más sólido. Incluso l@s mism@s vecin@s comenzaron a proponer y facilitar las actividades sabatinas =)
A misunderstanding arose with the authorities and a week before we began to carry out the installation, we realized that the Delegation had granted a permit to remodel the walkway that we would intervene; so we began to hold neighborhood dialogues and with the authorities. In the end we decided to wait until they finished doing the remodeling and while we would continue with the activities proposed by the neighbors.
Surgió un mal entendido con las autoridades y una semana antes de que comenzáramos a realiar la instalación, nos dimos cuenta que la Delegación había otorgado un permiso para remodelar el andador que intervendríamos;  así que comenzamos a realizar diálogos vecinales y con las autoridades. Al final decidimos esperarnos hasta que terminaran de hacer la remodelación y mientras continuaríiamos con las actividades propuestas por los vecinos.

The diffusion was done through posters, flyers, from house to house, by word of mouth and on social networks. It was a first moment of neighborhood and neighborhood contact, where the first collaboration with the neighbors who decided to help me disseminate the activities to present the project took place.
La difusión se hizo mediante carteles, volanteo, de casa en casa, de boca en boca y en redes sociales. Fue un primer momento de contacto vecinal y barrial, donde se gestaron las primeras colaboración con los vecinos que decidieron ayudarme a difundir las actividades para presentar el proyecto.

The first thing was to imagine how the installation would affect socially and how the space will look after the intervention took place. Once with this clear, I made a detailed proposal of activities, objectives, materials, partnerships, logistics and strategic calendar to follow. And I began to manage the corresponding delegational permits to intervene in the Nuevo León Building Footprint (because in the call, this space was not within the official options to intervene)
Lo primero fue imaginar cómo afectaría socialmente la instalación y cómo quedaría visualmente el espacio a intervenir. Una vez con esto claro, realicé una propuesta detallada de actividades, objetivos, materiales, asociaciones, logística y calendario estratégico a seguir. Y comencé a gestionar los permisos delegacionales correspondientes para intervenir la Huella del Edificio de Nuevo León (ya que en la convocatoria, este espacio no estaba dentro de las opciones oficiales a intervenir)
