Within the framework of a three-week artistic residency at Transliterado (exhibition space in the center of Nuevo León, Mexico), culminating in an exhibition. From the plants and steel found in the immediate environment, I conceive the micro landscape as a reflection of the way in which we have co-constructed reality and modified our ecosystem on a large scale in the State of Nuevo León, Mexico. Recalling the case of La Pastora Forest (where a protected natural area of the city was deforested to build a steel stadium) I reflect around polarity, recurring to the geometric forms of the square and the circle, using natural pigments from the immediate vegetation of the space and rusty steel. I selected the pigments used knowing that over time, the green colors of the grass would degrade until they disappeared, while the orange colors of the rusty steel would gain more strength and prevail over time. As an analogy of what happens with the contemporary landscape.

Detailed explanation of the process and work:
I came to the exhibition space with the idea of exploring and creating something in situ, applying the work and research methodology that I have been developing and socializing in workshops for more than eleven years: creating with pigments and natural materials found or cultivated, linking their therapeutic properties , medicinal and metaphysical with the context. Involving in this process my own psyche and inner world when carrying out acts of symbolic production. My first approach to Trans (exhibition space) was through social networks and from a distance, browsing Google Earth I was able to get an idea of the possible flora and color range to use and from there I began to put together a discursive proposal. The first day I physically got to know the space, I took measurements of the exhibition space and photographic records of the immediate vegetation, confirming its coexistence with pieces of steel. I verified how the micro landscape is the reflection of our macro ecosystem, and I remembered the case of Bosque la Pastora (where many trees, flora and endemic fauna were destroyed to place 11,600 tons of steel among other materials to build a football stadium). |
Conceiving reality as a great interconnected fractal, I approached various themes, speaking at different levels and layers, according to the cultural background of the viewer. Symbolically I related steel to the culture of work, progress, the economy, coins, with the rigid, with matter, with the individual, with masculine energy and I associated it geometrically with the square; questioning the way in which I relate to everything that this implies. Recognizing the importance and urgency of integrating all this into my daily life. I related vegetation with contemplation, beauty, abundance, eroticism, spirit, with the collective, with feminine energy, with the intangible, and I associated it geometrically with the circle. I recognized myself as a fish in the water in this circular dimension and at the same time I recognized how socially the trend is different since this circular being is often silenced and oppressed in pursuit of materialism, co-creating a quadrangular supremacy.
The proposal made is an invitation to reconnect with our roots, with the ancestral and therapeutic wisdom of plants. An almost ritual process of opening to the circle, a space to honor it and integrate it into the quadrangular. The possibility of blurring the apparent divisions, of recognizing the circle as necessary as the square and thus realizing that we are probably neither a circle nor a square, but rather something else; perhaps an ascending spiral in continuous movement... The work that I presented in this exhibition was made with the colors obtained from the immediate environment: rusty steel and green plants (rosemary and grass) using ancient painting techniques. Which made me reconnect with the Afro-Chichimecan roots of the people of the state; culture and memory erased from the collective history of the Northeast for the sake of "development". In the process of elaborating the green tones, I added tree´s ashes because over time, if the piece is exposed to the sun, its chromatic range will gradually darken, until it turns gray, leaving its trace as the urban stain that It is growing more and more in Nuevo León, Mexico. Chromatically I was inspired by the anacahuitas felled in the Bosque la Pastora, which actually are icons of the state of Nuevo León. The supports are pieces of wood in good condition (plywood and mdf between 12mm and 13mm thick) that were going to be discarded. Consistent with the sample, I avoided unnecessary felling of trees. |

In the face-to-face exhibition, viewers could take home seeds to balance the giving and taking in nature. As well as intervening as an embroidery the photos from which I started, with leaves of the African lily available in the exhibition space. Also I did insitu a small performance showing the way in which I painted the paintings and how through the materials used (micro-landscape) I was able to connect with the macro landscape. In addition, a part of the creative process was shown through a video edited by Jorgue Balleza. And around it, I showed my thoughts, exposing a part of my internal process of creating under stressful conditions.

About my internal processes when creating under stress:
The period of time to carry out the exhibition was three weeks; however, due to hazards of the spiral of life, the work was completed in three days; in which I experienced a lot of stress, thanks to which I was able to recognize my own limits, asking for support from my artist friends and family to conclude in a timely manner. Thus becoming the work in a sum of many wills. I especially appreciate the collaboration of Jorge G. Balleza for editing the video of part of my creative process, Lucy Trujillo Villanueva for squaring and digitally inserting stitches that would outline a circle so that the photographs could later be intervened, Toño Hernández for allowing me to be inspired , work and show their photographic collection on the botany of the Bosque la Pastora, the painter Crizara and my mother for helping me print part of the canvases. By creating under a lot of stress, my psyche opened up. On the one hand, I was able to connect with the social moment that was taking place in Nuevo León, an intermediate electoral process for the new 2021 government cabinet in the midst of a pandemic crisis. As I was preparing the rabbit glue sealer and chalk to prime my circle supports, I realized that the white powders I was working with (calcium carbonate and zinc white), looked like cocaine. Transferring my thoughts to the independence neighborhood, to the quarries, to the Colombian culture and to the necro-landscape. Faced with so much density, I decided to give a ritual mood to the process of preparing the support with my white powders. Connected to the plane of the symbolic, I took Coca-Cola tequila glasses as a standard measure, these somehow connected me with the work of Cildo Meireles and with Femsa (with the case of Bosque la Pastora), with narco-politics and the bio-power. |
While internally I accepted that bio-politics and bio-power are part of material reality, of the complex square in which I live, it overwhelms me and I cannot change. Reality that is given to me by the simple fact of inhabiting the planet earth; I began to connect with more subtle realities, with the circular. With Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. And my thoughts began to wrap themselves in fantasies and dream realities, I wondered: what if in that representation of Da Vinci instead of having shaped a man's body it had been that of a woman? What if it were me at my current 33 years (age I was at that time) integrating the quadrangular into my future? I began to accept the square and began to "bless and sanctify it" by placing the white powders in a glass cup cut with pure gold filament, as well as the water contained in Coca-Cola containers and rabbit tail, to deposit them all in a stainless steel bowl, which would be floating in a container to be heated in a bain-marie. I symbolically placed a pearly snail in the warm water, referring to the spiral of life, energizing existence. Once all the materials had been purified, I began to prime and entered a meditative trance where I found climax while painting, creating and integrating the green color using a long, wide muller introduced into my vagina and with it I prepared to flatten the harvested vegetation (rosemary and grass); to later spray the canvas with my rivers of living water, then with the green pigments and finally with the steel paint. Jorge G. Balleza edited the record that would be presented in the exhibition, omitting some parts, thus opening the way to the sacredness of intimacy, prayer, silence, respect for women, the priestess, the earth, as well as to the power of the imagination. To reduce my stress, I applied in my own way the method "The work" learned from the dramaturge José Sampedro, questioning my ideas about perfection, what it means to be an artist for me and an artist before society. I included these thoughts in the sample next to the video because they were part of the process, as well as all the elements used to create the painting.

Objectively, squaring the circle is a criticism of excessive materialism in Nuevo León. But subtly speaking, it is an act of humility, of recognition of the importance of both the circle and the square, in order to overcome the apparent polarity and become a Living spiral and from there co/create a world where many worlds fit. A hug to the All. Like yin and yang. This work was for me a deep internal process of reconciliation and love, the integration of my own polarity, opening myself to processes of forgiveness and redemption.
Everything changes. Everything is in motion. Everything is dynamic. Like an upward spiral. The circle is the spirit. The square matter. Both are necessary to activate the existing. The separation is illusory. The integration of the apparent polarity opens the understanding and makes the look more complex. Nothing is more, nothing is less.
